The cat is out of the bag. The reason I’ve been so busy the last few months is that I’ve been working towards opening Thimble & Notch! This idea has actually been several years in the making, but at the beginning of 2018 I finally decided that the time was right to take the plunge.
So, what is Thimble & Notch, and why should you care? I’ll tell ya.
Thimble & Notch is an online fabric shop designed to take the stress out of shopping for fabric via the magic of the internet. Buying fabric in person is often the preference of the home sewist, but you’re limited to the shops in your area, if you’re even lucky enough to have any nearby.
I’ve had my fair share of internet fabric shopping disasters (remember this skirt?) so I’ve tried hard to unpick those disasters and I’ve come up with what I think is a fairly foolproof method of describing the fabric so you’ll know exactly what will arrive on your doorstep. With the best will in the world, a photo and a brief description isn’t always enough. Our rating system gives each fabric a score out of 5 for opacity, drape, sheen, and stability. The more of each quality it possesses, the higher the score. Simple! Fabric shopping on the internet can be something you have to resort to, for fear of ordering the wrong thing. I want to change that.
You’ll see from the bright, bold branding that this ain’t your Granny’s haberdashery! Although crafting is gradually getting a reputation for being kinda cool, all too often, home sewing is still seen as being a bit drab and boring and, by extension, the people that do it are too. Not so! I wanted to move away from the twee image of sewing your own and I hope you’ll agree we’ve cracked it.
What will we be stocking? Of course we’ll be carrying the usual florals, spots, stripes and the odd novelty print, but we’ll also be keeping a focus on fashion fabrics inspired by the high street too. Quality plain fabrics can be hard to find, so in the coming months, I’ll be working hard to bring you a range of reliable plains to mix and match with your existing handmade wardrobe as well. There are A LOT of samples arriving on the doorstep of T&N HQ- I’m picky! I’m really keen for Thimble and Notch to be by, about, and for home sewists so I’d welcome feedback on the range we have. If you don’t see what you want please tell me!
And when can you see all the good stuff? We open on Saturday 14th April at 10am
