I must be the last dressmaker on the planet to try Tilly And The Buttons’ Coco pattern. I’ve always liked it, but I’ve put off trying it because I’ve struggled to find nice ponte at a reasonable price.
I was browsing in the Minerva sale after Christmas and found some mid grey ponte with a fine white stripe. I wasn’t completely overwhelmed by it but it was the nicest one I’d seen in a while and it was reduced to £7.99 a metre.
I cut the long sleeve dress version and skipped the pockets, cuffs and funnel neck. It was a really quick and simple make. I cut and sewed it in one evening with time to spare. Ponte roma is a dream to sew with! When I tried my dress on it was like magic. The so-so fabric had been transformed into my perfect day dress!
I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out! The fit is great, the shape is really flattering and it’s sooo comfortable. The pattern matching went pretty well too. I added 2½” to the length to get the hem to fall just above my knee. I’m about 5’6”, so not especially tall but if I hadn’t added the extra inches I would definitely have found it to be way too short. I wasn’t keen on the high neckline so cut a scoop shape out instead. It seems to have worked out fine and I’d definitely do that on my next one. Apart from those two small changes I made it exactly as instructed.
Tilly’s instructions were brilliant and I’d definitely recommend this pattern if you’re nervous about sewing with knits. I love my Coco and now feel a bit silly for putting it off for so long! It’s so easy to wear, just chuck it on over some tights and boots and you look stylish with no effort. I know its going to become a staple in my wardrobe and I’d love to have it in a few different colours to suit the seasons.
Where do you buy your ponte roma? I need more Cocos!
